Visit to a very private museum

September 9, 2010

Deep in the heart of the Vallée de Joux, in the Village of Le Brassus, the Audemars Piguet Museum invites visitors to take an introductory voyage into the arcane secrets of time. A small detour that’s worth every minute for the mechanical watch enthusiast.

Private and open by appointment only, the Audemars Piguet Museum has one of the most beautiful collections of watch complications in the world. This paradise for amateurs of haute horlogerie retraces the history of the Vallée du Joux and offers a tour through time from the ancestral creations of the master watchmakers of the Jura to the latest models manufactured in Le Brassus.

A veritable walking encyclopedia, museum director Martin Wehrli gladly opens the doors of his sanctuary to share his passion with visitors. “Audemars Piguet is the oldest watch manufacturer still in the hands of its founding families. We have exceptional documents and archives such as, for example, every single order book from 1875 to the present. We can therefore trace the date and place where each of our manufactured creations was sold,” he explains. As caretaker of a priceless heritage, he also travels the world in search of rare timepieces to enrich the impressive collection, which already contains more than 900 pieces.

The museum, which has been set up in the original Audemars family residence, is testimony not only to the age-old roots of the factory created in le Brassus in 1875 by Jules-Louis Audemars and Edward-Auguste Piguet but also to the important role of the brand in the history of watchmaking. From pocket-watches made in 1780 before the existence of Audemars Piguet, to the most spectacular contemporary grand complications, and including the two workshops where six artisans demonstrate their savoir-faire, the museum’s six rooms give enthusiasts an opportunity to discover, during their visit, one of the most beautiful illustrations of traditional Swiss watchmaking.

The timekeeper

The Audemars Piguet repair workshop restores timepieces that are over a hundred years old. Francisco Pasandin, head of the workshop, is the self-appointed guardian of a disappearing brand of watchmaking expertise.
